Classes

Martial arts has the unique ability to bring its practitioners confidence, grace, and strength; it's also a great way to learn to defend yourself or others and will help you achieve a quiet mind — a state which is increasingly important in our busy, multi-tasking, always-online world. We feel that our practice offers the best of both worlds, teaching both the physical and spiritual aspects of martial art.

No Contracts

Great Way Chinese Martial Arts does not require a contract. We feel that our programs speak for themselves and our students come back for more because that love it and want to be here.

Intimate Class Sizes

We believe in teaching the individual. Our classes are small and friendly. You'll be working in small groups so that you can get the attention you (or your child) needs to master the art.

Variety of Instruction

Every one of your instructors will have a slightly different style of teaching. This can only serve to strengthen your foundation and understanding of the Great Way curriculum as you progress.

Progression

“Things of value are not easily obtained”, this saying is true of our belt system. We test every 4 to 6 months and not everyone tests at that time. Testing is a gauge of proficiency and understanding over a set amount of material. For each level you make it through you are still required to hone the curriculum you passed through previously.

Respect and Discipline

In order to help our students succeed and develop confidence we focus on reinforcing the qualities of respect and discipline. It is important to establish an understanding of what is expected in a class as well as create boundaries that help everyone grow. The expectations are always the same: be considerate of others, stand still and listen when spoken to.

Fitness

Your classes will push you mentally and physically. From stretching to fighting technique you will find greater levels of balance and fitness. We never ask for more than you can give, but we'll make sure you're leaving sore.

The Great Way is easy, yet people prefer the side paths.

Be aware when things are out of balance.

Lao Tzu

Bullying

One of the main reasons parents call about martial arts training is for self-defense and or self-esteem issues stemming from some sort of “bullying”. No one is immune to the effects of abuse, be it physical or verbal. It can haunt a person for a lifetime and manifests in a variety of ways. Our program is designed to help young people to not only “be comfortable in their own skin”, but also develop awareness and strength to stand on their own.

Self-confidence through physical activity has been used time and time again to help children and young adults overcome issues of low self-esteem. Learning to stand your ground and knowing what to do when someone larger and stronger attacks you is invigorating. You have to pay attention or you can get hit, in a controlled environment this is a great learning tool. It is not a false sense of security it is a process that gets reinforced every class. The ability to focus under duress and look someone in the eye are some of the wonderful byproducts of developing self-confidence.

Kung fu & Kempo (Adult)

Ssu Tao Pai Kung fu and Kempo is a Five Animal System. Long ago when practitioners were developing martial arts and healing modalities they drew from nature to describe and define their training. In Traditional Martial Arts we maintain these practices to help train our bodies, minds and spirits!

Tiger

Punching, Kicking and Blocking techniques, Elbow and Knee Strikes

Tiger forms and defenses are used to develop ferocity and strength for self-defense and confidence. The forms utilize low powerful stances combined with strong blocks, powerful kicks and strikes. This helps the student gain a better understanding of movement through their center of gravity while attacking and defending from various opponents. The defenses are simple and powerful with emphasis on blocking or breaking a hold then countering with elbows and knees.

Leopard

Beginning Chin Na (Basic Grappling)

After gaining proficiency with Tiger movement our students progress to Leopard forms and defenses. The forms reflect the leopard’s agility, balance and speed while continuing to refine core strength and awareness. Leopard defenses introduce technical fighting skills by incorporating basic sets of joint locks and pressure points.

Crane

Chi Na (Pressure points), leg sweeping

Crane forms and defenses serve to further define our student’s abilities. While graceful they are particularly challenging to all body types. We integrate jumping and leg sweeps as well as strong wrist blocks and strikes. The defenses of the Crane continue the progression of the studies of pressure points and introduce concepts of hollow fighting.

Health is the greatest possession. Contentment is the greatest treasure. Confidence is the greatest friend.

Lao Tzu

Snake

Chin Na (Take downs, Grappling, pressure points)

As with all fighting styles opponents often end up on the ground. At this point we incorporate a deeper practice of ground fighting, hence the use of Snake techniques. The Snake Forms and defenses teach our students advanced take downs, technical grappling including advanced joint locks, and pressure points.

Dragon

Incorporates the four previous levels with more advance techniques

At last we arrive at the point where we draw from all the previous levels: “Dragon”. Mythically and philosophically the Dragon is revered for its ability to exist comfortably in all elements. A poised and balanced state of being is developed through continued attention to Body, Mind and Spirit. Our techniques recognize these qualities and challenge our students through the forms and defenses that will help to make them a balanced practitioner of Ssu Tao Pai Kung fu.

Tai Chi Meditation in Motion

The amazing art of Tai Chi is revered for its health benefits and beauty. It is the combination of soft, fluid movements with attention to Mind (focus) and Breath. Practicing Tai Chi will lower stress and bring about a relaxed state of mind. Anyone can do Tai Chi. It is a low-impact workout that slowly and gently helps you develop greater balance and coordination.

Our classes are designed to give you a solid foundation to practice Tai Chi on a daily basis. Posture and proper “breath work” are very important to facilitate the balanced flow of Qi (energy) in your body. The movements of Tai Chi stimulate the body’s energetic system which leads to better health and wellness.

In numerous Medical studies Western Science has found that those who practice Tai Chi see marked improvement from symptoms of diseases. Tai Chi has been shown to help with the symptoms of Arthritis, Stroke, Parkinson’s, Hypertension and Heart Disease to name a few.

All of our programs include meditation to further the benefits of living in the moment. We continually draw attention to the importance of finding balance. The inner peace developed by either doing Tai Chi or Meditation (standing and/or seated) is amazing and will pervade other aspects of your life. Practicing daily is how we find balance and better mental and physical health. The peacefulness known by "Monks or Sages" is not as elusive as one might think. The key is a mindful practice…

Qi Gong

Qi gong is the practice of aligning breath, mind, posture and movement. It is a gentle way to develop focus and and cultivate your “Life energy”. Daily practice will heighten your awareness of yourself and the world around you. Practitioners have used Qi gong over centuries for its health benefits, healing and meditative qualities.

Quite often in life we forget to just stop and breathe. Qi gong practice is meditative and gentle, requiring only that you take the time to slow down. The more you do so, the more energized you become. Some postures are static while others have gentle fluid movements. Daily practice is like unblocking a stream allowing our vibrant life force to flow as it should, nourishing the whole body.

There is a Chinese saying: “where the mind goes, so goes your Qi”. Imagine regaining control over a mind that likes to hop from one dramatic event to another. Imagine again all the energy and time wasted while the mind goes wild contemplating “what could be?” In your personal practice you gently rein in the mind, slowly harness your breath and with the proper guidance the benefits are limitless.

It is no wonder why Qi gong (and Tai Chi for that matter) have remained popular over the centuries. With so many people destroying their health in the world, we have simple movements and concepts that wise and wonderful people long ago shared to help us regain balance. Even skeptical modern science admits that there are numerous benefits to practicing Qi Gong.

Qi Gong is fun, energizing, calming, transformative and much more…

Iron Training

Why is Iron Training Important for MMA Fighters?

Iron training can bring you superiority in the ring. The force that can be applied to an opponent is unequaled but be aware can kill. As such this training is not to be taken lightly and comes with great responsibility.

In addition, we all know what happens to professional athletes that take hard impacts through out their careers they are out of the fighting ring and they end up in pain in their old age. The constant impact on their bodies can only last through youth. In order to have longevity as a fighter and protect yourself from the damage endured during fighting you should seriously consider Iron Training.

Brief History of Iron Training

Research suggests that iron hand training dates back centuries, to The Shaolin Temple In China. Referred to as “Tiet Sau” or putting iron in body weapons.

The original intent of Iron Training was due to the dangers posed during combat with swords, spears or arrows. The method was developed and trained by those diligent enough and is the origin of myths like “death touch”/“one hit one kill”, due to the fact that a masterful exponent does posses the ability to “extinguish life” with a well placed strike.

The Development of a Crushing Grip/Grip Strength

This means that connections in the bones of the hand and arm are strong to repel the forces of later training/striking.

The Development/Conditioning of the Bones of the Hand

  • Making denser the bones of the hand, arm, shin, head, through gradual process of stages of hard training.
  • The hand/striking body weapons become very resistant to damage and hard.
  • The fist can become like the head of a sledge hammer.

The Development of Whole Body Flexibility

This allows the body to function well, allows the student to assume core positions during training for the long periods of time necessary to achieve results. Also, the body that is well aligned transmits forces through bones well. This is the start of iron shirt.

The Development of Chi/Working of the Tendon System

Chi allows the student to build up the natural forces within the body that resist damage. This is a physical change and energetic change allowing the body to resist damage and heal faster. The exercises work the connective tissue and tendons causing blood to better circulate to the areas which seems to repel damage.
